I många timmar klamrar han sig fast i masten. Alfred blir den ende överlevande när det 115 meter långa fartyget Macona bryts av på mitten och förliser norr om Nidingen. Ögonblicket innan båten sjunker lyckas han klättra upp i en mast och surra fast sig. Endast masten sticker upp ovanför havsytan. Han hör ångestskriken när hans kamrater försvinner med fartyget ner i det mörka och iskalla havsdjupet. Timmarna går och Alfred är nära att ge upp.
